Hi, I'm James Robinson, CTO at OpenSignal and WeatherSignal

James Robinson's Bio:

James Robinson builds sensor networks to create new and better data sources. At OpenSignal he is using smartphone apps to measure the extent and quality of cellular networks and to crowdsource the locations of WiFi hotspots. By creating free and impartial maps of carriers worldwide OpenSignal seek to champion consumer choice. OpenSignal's global data is also used to develop tools to provide in depth competitive analysis to MNOs and wireless regulators worldwide (OpenSignal Insight Reports).    OpenSignal have amassed the largest global database on cellular and WiFi built from a community of 5 million app users. The dataset is unique both in scale and its ability to illuminate the true service experienced by mobile consumers. OpenSignal was named the UK's Most Innovative Mobile Company at MWC 2013 by SmartUK (UKTI).   At WeatherSignal James is creating apps that repurpose the sensors on smartphones, turning each device into a WeatherStation and each user into a contributor to a global weather network. By working with academics and international weather organisations they are leading the development of the best methods to extract meteorological information from new data sources - for example pioneering the use of battery temperatures as a source of ambient air temperature - their paper on the same was published in Geophysical Research Letters in August 2013.   James is fascinated by the power of data visualisation, analysis & anecdotes to tell stories about data. Proud to have produced a graphic that was hailed by Business Insider as "Chart of the day" and The Guardian as one of "The world's worst infographics".
